A National League showdown between two teams sitting in second place in their respective divisions takes place Monday night in Chicago, Illinois, as the Cubs (46-38) host the San Diego Padres (43-39) to open a three-game series. This matchup features two of the NL’s more competitive teams, but the biggest storyline is the strong winds expected to blow out at Wrigley Field, which could have a major impact on the game.

The Padres enter this series after dropping the final two games of their set against the Dodgers, though they had just swept the NL East-leading Atlanta Braves beforehand. It’s still been a down year offensively for San Diego, which ranks near the bottom of MLB in several major offensive categories. Manny Machado is batting just .188, while Fernando Tatís Jr. has only three home runs through 81 games. Even so, the Padres remain competitive and firmly in the thick of the NL playoff race.

The Cubs have experienced both highs and lows this season, but like the Padres, they remain firmly in the playoff picture as the All-Star break approaches. Chicago enters Monday riding back-to-back series wins over the New York Mets and NL Central-leading Milwaukee Brewers, winning six of its last seven games.

With hot summer weather and strong winds expected to blow out, Wrigley Field should be an extremely hitter-friendly environment Monday night. While neither club ranks among the league leaders in home runs, both lineups have enough firepower to create plenty of offense – potentially a nightmare scenario for whichever pitchers take the mound throughout the night.

Padres vs Cubs Best Bet: Shota Imanaga Over 3.5 Earned Runs

Shota Imanaga hasn’t had his best season in 2026. The left-hander is 5-6 with a career-high 4.40 ERA through his first 16 starts and owns a 4.50 ERA through his first four starts in June.

Imanaga’s 4.75 ERA at home and .228 opponents’ batting average are both higher than his numbers on the road, and Monday night’s conditions at Wrigley likely won’t help. Although it came away from home, he’s coming off a rough outing against the Mets in which he allowed three home runs and four earned runs across 5.1 innings. His 20 home runs allowed this season are tied for the second-most in MLB entering Monday.

Earlier this season, Imanaga endured a four-start stretch in which he allowed eight, seven, five, and six earned runs while giving up at least two home runs in each outing.

The Padres have hit the sixth-fewest home runs in baseball and have struggled offensively overall, but with the talent in their lineup, Imanaga’s tendency to allow runs and home runs, and the hot, windy conditions at Wrigley, it could be a long night for the Cubs’ left-hander.
