The 2026 World Cup knockout stage continues Monday with a three-match slate, including Germany vs. Paraguay in Massachusetts. Germany advanced to the inaugural Round of 32 after finishing atop Group E, while Paraguay snuck into the knockout stage as one of the tournament’s eight best third-place teams after earning four points in Group D.

While Germany may not be mentioned in quite the same breath as France, Argentina, Spain, and England, it remains one of the favorites to lift the trophy. Germany won its first two group-stage matches, including a dominant 7-1 victory over Curaçao in its opener, but enters the knockout stage following a 2-1 loss to Ecuador in its final group-stage match. That defeat raised some questions about Germany’s form, particularly against stronger competition.

Paraguay finished the group stage 1-1-1, with its lone victory coming in a 1-0 win over Türkiye. Even in that victory, Paraguay didn’t show much to suggest it’s capable of making a deep tournament run. However, with Germany showing some vulnerabilities of its own, an upset isn’t out of the question with a trip to the Round of 16 at stake.

Germany vs. Paraguay Current Odds

Germany vs. Paraguay Best Bet: Florian Wirtz To Record an Assist

Germany scored 10 goals through its three group-stage matches, but that total was largely driven by its seven-goal performance against Curaçao in the opener. Florian Wirtz didn’t find the back of the net in that match, but he did record an assist on Felix Nmecha’s goal in the sixth minute to open the scoring.

While Wirtz didn’t assist either of Deniz Undav’s two goals in Germany’s 2-1 win over Ivory Coast in the following match, he was still a major contributor. His 103 touches ranked second on the team, while his 0.42 expected assists were tied for the team lead. Wirtz didn’t play the full 90 minutes in Germany’s group-stage finale, a 2-1 loss to Ecuador, after being substituted in the 73rd minute. However, he still recorded an assist on Leroy Sané’s goal in the second minute in what was otherwise an underwhelming performance by Germany.

Wirtz is tied for the team lead with two assists at this year’s World Cup and remains heavily involved in Germany’s attack. He’s also tied for the team lead with eight shots through the group stage.
