At long last, college football has officially returned. The 2026-27 season begins across the Atlantic, as North Carolina and TCU meet on Saturday afternoon in the Aer Lingus College Football Classic at Aviva Stadium in Dublin, Ireland. Kickoff is scheduled for noon ET on ESPN.
Saturday’s matchup sends Bill Belichick into his second season at North Carolina against the same opponent that spoiled his college coaching debut. The Tar Heels scored on their opening possession against TCU last September, but the Horned Frogs answered with 41 consecutive points on their way to a 48-14 victory in Chapel Hill.
TCU went on to finish 9-4 and closed the season with three straight wins, including a 30-27 overtime victory over No. 16 USC in the Alamo Bowl. The Horned Frogs averaged 421.5 yards and 30.7 points per game, with their passing offense ranking eighth nationally at 290.1 yards per game.
Much of that production came through quarterback Josh Hoover and leading receiver Eric McAlister, neither of whom returns this season. Harvard transfer QB Jaden Craig will make his TCU debut after finishing his career with the Crimson as the program’s all-time leader in passing yards and touchdown passes.
Craig will also operate a new offense under coordinator Gordon Sammis, who arrives after helping UConn produce consecutive nine-win seasons. TCU returns only four offensive starters, although running back Jeremy Payne and wide receiver Jordan Dwyer give Craig two proven options. Dwyer caught nine passes for 136 yards and a touchdown against North Carolina last season before finishing the year with 730 receiving yards and seven scores.
North Carolina has made significant changes of its own after finishing Belichick’s first season at 4-8. The Tar Heels averaged only 288.8 yards and 19.3 points per game, leading to the arrival of veteran offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino.
Billy Edwards Jr. will start at quarterback after missing nearly all of last season at Wisconsin because of an injury. Edwards previously started at Maryland, throwing for 2,881 yards and 15 touchdowns in 2024. He will be joined by returning running back Demon June and wide receiver Jordan Shipp, who led North Carolina with 60 receptions, 671 yards and six touchdowns last season.
The Tar Heels were more competitive defensively, ranking 38th nationally at 336.9 yards allowed per game. That unit will now be challenged by a TCU offense breaking in a new quarterback and play-caller on a neutral field.

North Carolina +9.5 (-110): TCU embarrassed North Carolina in Belichick’s college coaching debut last season, turning an early 7-0 deficit into a 48-14 victory. That result gives the Tar Heels an obvious source of motivation entering Saturday’s rematch, but the changes surrounding both teams are more important when evaluating this spread.
TCU returns several proven playmakers, but the Horned Frogs will be breaking in a new quarterback and offensive coordinator while replacing six offensive starters. Craig was highly productive at Harvard, but Saturday will be his first start against a Power Four opponent. Asking that reworked offense to cover 9.5 points on a neutral field is a sizable expectation.
North Carolina should also be better equipped at quarterback with Edwards leading Petrino’s offense, while a defense that improved after last year’s opener gives the Tar Heels a better chance to keep the rematch competitive.
Recent history in Dublin also favors giving the underdog a look. Georgia Tech stunned No. 10 Florida State, 24-21, in the 2024 season opener before No. 22 Iowa State defeated No. 17 Kansas State by the same score last season. We’ll take the points with North Carolina +9.5 (-110) on Saturday.
